Who inspires you and why?

Alan Turing, without a doubt, is my greatest inspiration. As the pioneer of modern computing and an instrumental figure in cracking the Enigma code during World War II, Turing transformed the world of cryptography and laid the groundwork for what we now know as cybersecurity.

What is your guilty pleasure?

Ah, my guilty pleasure! Believe it or not, it’s old-school arcade games. There’s something about the simplicity and nostalgia of games like Pac-Man and Space Invaders that offer a delightful break from the complexities of cybersecurity.

Background & Work Experience

Welcome to the world of comprehensive cybersecurity solutions offered by Michael Mercer, a seasoned professional and former CSO with the FBI. Drawing on a remarkable 31-year career in the FBI and the US Coast Guard, alongside a solid academic foundation in information systems and information assurance, Mr. Mercer provides his unparalleled expertise to organizations in need, pro bono. His breadth of knowledge and experience, combined with a proven track record in creating effective, personalized security strategies, empowers your organization to withstand cyber threats and thrive amidst them. In the realm of Physical Security, my responsibilities have been both broad and demanding. Serving as the Site Security Officer and Security Project Manager during the construction of the expansive 375,000 square foot FBI Denver Field Office, I demonstrated my ability to provide robust physical security solutions throughout the project’s lifecycle. I put into practice the principles of the Intelligent Community Directive (ICD-705) for FBI construction ventures, ensuring rigorous security standards. My role also involved managing intricate security systems, such as access control, armed security guards, intrusion detection (alarms), and CCTV systems, thereby ensuring the utmost security of the premises. A significant highlight of my career has been the construction of over 24 SCIFs (Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities), maintaining the highest level of secure communication and information storage standards. Moreover, I performed annual SCIF inspections to ensure their optimal functioning and compliance with set guidelines. In addition to these, I have undertaken comprehensive threat assessments on FBI facilities, inspecting the infrastructures and recommending viable countermeasures to further bolster their security.

Under Business Operations, my role encompassed managing critical programs and internal security investigations. I spearheaded the Continuity of Operations Program (COOP) and the Disaster Recovery Program, ensuring that business processes remained operational in the face of disruption or disasters. My responsibilities further extended to the sphere of insider threats – a critical concern in any organization. I was entrusted with the management of the Insider Threat Program for the Denver FBI Field Office. In this capacity, I developed, implemented, and oversaw measures to predict, prevent, and mitigate risks posed by potential insider threats. Additionally, I conducted a series of internal security investigations, demonstrating my thoroughness and commitment to maintaining an uncompromised and secure business environment. My work in business operations highlights my ability to blend security considerations with operational demands, fostering both resilience and efficiency.
